Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays (which are like little Easters), beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, meaning “lengthen” and refers to the lengthening days of spring. The 40 days represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan in preparation for His ministry, as well as the 40 days of Noah’s flood, and the 40 years the Israelites spent wandering in the desert with Moses.
Lent is a time of self-examination, reflection, and action. In the early church, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by new converts to Christianity who would then be baptized on Easter. Today, we focus on our relationship with God, growing as disciples of Jesus Christ, and giving ourselves away for the uplifting of others.
Jesus spent time in the wilderness fasting and praying, and many Christians choose to observe Lent by fasting from food or from whatever interferes with their time with God, such as surfing the web, television, and social media. In addition, we take this opportunity to add or increase the practice of spiritual disciplines, including fasting, worship, prayer, bible reading, meditation, tithing, giving, and serving. The point is to become more Christ-like – not just for 40 days, but for every day of our lives.
We receive a special collection throughout Lent for Educational Scholarships for our children at Grace Methodist Church in Naskal Village, India, and bring our offerings on Palm Sunday.
